ASX-listed European Lithium Ltd is developing the Wolfsberg lithium project in Austria, and, as non-executive chairman Tony Sage explains to Proactive Investors, it is not doing so from a standing start. The Austrian government backed a previous developer of the mine in the eighties, pumping the equivalent of about a hundred million dollars in today’s money into the project before the mine was put into mothballs after the lithium price collapsed. Fast forward some thirty years and lithium is a hot property, being used in batteries – particularly in the burgeoning electric car market. “A lot of the hard work has now been done for the company, and it’s now up to us to resurrect the old mine and start to get it into production over the next two years,” Sage said. The company still has to sift through a pile of information collected by the Austrians back in the eighties, and it has done a bit of drilling to verify that data. “We’ve now got 6.3mln tonnes going over 1% lithium”, Sage said. The company is mulling two routes to production, and which route it takes depends on the testing the company is currently doing. If the ore is ready to be mined, then some production could be fast-tracked. Over the long term, by the end of 2018 or early 2019, the company should be in full production. “Our aim is to be the very first supplier of lithium from Europe, to Europe,” Sage said. “You’ve got a lot of suppliers coming from South America, Australia and North America, but the cost of transporting the material to Europe is expensive; if we can be the first producers in Europe, we can distribute the product throughout Europe for four or five dollars a tonne.”

First I thought we should talk about where you can find lithium today. The truth is it’s likely on your body right now, you may be holding it in your hand, or you’re looking directly at it. But you might be surprised to know it’s also used in things like tools, aerospace equipment, military applications and backup storage for our Electric grid. And of course, Tesla’s and other electric cars // Looking to buy a Tesla S or X? Use our referral code and instantly receive $1,000 off and Free Supercharging! (limited) Get Started - https://teslanomics.co/td // It is so good for batteries that 39% of all Lithium production goes towards battery production. So what is Lithium anyway? Lithium itself is a soft, silvery-white alkali metal. It is the lightest metal and the lightest solid element. Like all alkali metals, lithium is highly reactive and flammable. So this isn’t something you’d want just laying around your house. Especially if you have a toddler running around like I do... So Lithium is a metal so it must be mined right, like copper? Well, not exactly. It’s true lithium can be mined from rocks but mostly it’s found in brine pools. Lithium is also present in seawater but there aren’t any commercially viable methods of extracting it at this time As an aside when you see a meme floating around the internet showing a giant mine where lithium comes from, it’s a lie. As of 2017, most of the world's lithium production is in South America, where lithium-containing brine is extracted from underground pools and concentrated by solar evaporation. The standard extraction technique is to evaporate water from brine. Each batch takes from 18 to 24 months. With so much demand for lithium it’s a fair question to ask... Are Tesla and others doomed? Well…not really The US Geological Survey’s report for 2017 shows that "Worldwide lithium production increased by an estimated 12% in 2016 in response to increased lithium demand for battery applications. Production in Argentina increased nearly 60%, primarily owing to a new brine operation; the leading Argentine producer also increased production. A producer in Chile reported that its production rose by 20%. Two small Australian spodumene operations, one new and one inactive since 2013, planned to begin commercial concentrate production by year end. Worldwide lithium production capacity was reported to be 49,400 tons in 2015; capacity utilization was estimated to be 64% in 2015 and 71% in 2016. Based on average projections by producers and industry analysists of about 14% growth worldwide, consumption of lithium in 2016 is projected to be about 37,800 tons, up from 33,300 tons in 2015. So the trend is going up, but when you look at the overall picture you find that owing to continuing exploration, lithium resources have increased substantially worldwide. Identified lithium resources in the United States, from continental brines, geothermal brines, hectorite, oil field brines, and pegmatites, have been revised to 6.9 million tons. Identified lithium resources in other countries have been revised to approximately 40 million tons. Identified lithium resources in Argentina and Bolivia are about 9 million tons each and in major producing countries are Australia, more than 2 million tons; Chile, more than 7.5 million tons; and China, approximately 7 million tons. Canada’s lithium resources are about 2 million tons. Congo (Kinshasa), Russia, and Serbia have resources of about 1 million tons each. Lithium resources in Brazil and Mexico are approximately 200,000 tons each and Austria, and Zimbabwe have more than 100,000 tons each. Beyond just producing more lithium, companies like Tesla have focused on creating a closed-loop battery recycling program since as early as 2011. So while Tesla drivetrains are rated to go 1M miles, and the batteries will likely last to last north of 350K miles, once the cars do get turned in, Tesla isn’t going to just throw away those precious metals. If you’re an investor in companies reliant on lithium for their batteries such as Tesla, Apple, Google, or any other company making electronics today, you shouldn’t worry about the supply chain. We’ve got a long road ahead of us and probably by the time we need to worry about a shortage of Lithium we’ll have a new way to make batteries that are even better. // Join Our Community on Patreon! Peter Secker, chief executive of Bacanora Minerals (LON:BCN) says the completion of the pre-feasibility study at its Sonora project is “another milestone and another step in the development of the project.” The PFS estimated an internal rate of return of 29% (post-tax 25%) and an associated net present value US$776mln, (post-tax US$542mln). “We are continuing to deliver good news and we think we are on the next stage of developing Bacanora into a significant lithium producer,” he says. The next stage is to search for off take partners, with Secker’s preference for two large off takers on long term supply agreements.

Lithium Power (ASX:LPI) (OTCMKTS:LTHHF) has released a positive preliminary economic assessment (PEA) study for its Maricunga lithium brine project in Chile. Highlights of that study include the following. - Production - 20,000 tpa of lithium carbonate (LCE) and 74,000 tpa of potassium chloride (KCl) fertiliser. - Operating costs - US$2,938/t LCE (US$2,635/t post KCl credit). - Project NPV - US$731 million after tax at 8% discount rate (US$1.049 billion before tax - IRR of 23.4% (ungeared). - Capital costs - US$527 million (US$389 million direct costs, including KCl plant). - Short payback - 2 years and 11 months (based on 2-year ramp-up period). - Mine life - 20 years (initial). Analyst comment: this excellent achievement for Lithium Power positions Maricunga to become the next producing lithium asset in Chile and, in our opinion, the standout lithium brine development project globally, due to its forecast exceptionally low operating costs. While most of the assumptions were in line with our previous estimates, capital costs are higher. We believe there may be scope to reduce these costs in future studies, given that US$137 million of the total capital outlay was for contingencies and indirect costs. Also boding well for the development of Maricunga is the election of Sebastián Piñera, a conservative billionaire, as the country's president. Piñera is reportedly pro-business and foreign investment, and there is a high degree of expectation that the new government will enact numerous policies to encourage and improve the lithium industry in Chile. Valuation: we have decreased our valuation of Lithium Power to $1.13/share (previously $1.24). The driver for this reduction was higher capital costs than our previous estimate.

December 9, 2016 -- Chris Reed, CEO & Managing Director of Neometals Ltd. (ASX: NMT), in an interview with InvestorIntel CEO Tracy Weslosky discuss the recent MOU with Mineral Resources, the recent shareholder update, and the significance of the deal with Ganfeng – “the largest most diverse lithium producer in China”. Starting with their progress on the development of a downstream lithium chemical plant that would produce battery quality lithium hydroxide product suitable for direct sales to the lithium-ion battery industry, Chris explains Neometals’ recent milestones and what interested investors may anticipate in the New Year for the company. Tracy Weslosky:  Chris you had a lot of news lately --- a terrific update for your shareholders in that you recently announced an MOU with Mineral Resources to further progress the development of a downstream lithium chemical plant that would produce battery quality lithium hydroxide product suitable for direct sales to the lithium-ion battery industry. Can you please provide the InvestorIntel audience with an update on this MOU please?  Chris Reed: Absolutely Tracy. Part of the transaction with Ganfeng last year was that they’re obligated to purchase the first three years’ production from the Mount Marion Mine. After the third production year, Mineral Resources and NeoMetals had the option then to buyback 51% of the offtake so that we could have a feed for our own downstream processing ambitions. You know, we have long wanted to become an integrated producer of lithium. The first step was to get the mine up and running as a concentrate producer and then in a couple of years’ time, because it actually takes that long --- once you completed the construction of the concentrator operation it takes you a number of years to permit and build a lithium down streaming plant. It is really just an affirmation now that the mine is moving into commercial production, that we are now in the final stages of the evaluation of downstream production of lithium hydroxide and it’s a commitment for both of us to advance that with a view that we can make a final investment decision in early 2017. Tracy Weslosky: Christopher Ecclestone was describing this as a superb deal and that shareholders may not truly appreciate the nuances of this deal. I think what he was trying to say was, number one, you have proven your extraction technology process works and perhaps you’d like to comment a little further about his analysis on this deal.  Chris Reed: I think Chris is certainly one of the few analysts that gets our overarching strategy and that’s one, to get the mine up and running, derisk that, at the same time develop the flowsheet for downstream processing. The deal with Ganfeng and I think one of the misunderstood barriers to entry to the lithium market is actually having a large customer to sell your product to. If you want to start up a good size mine you need to move a load concentrate. You need a large partner. Ganfeng are the largest most diverse lithium producer in China, certainly the fastest growing, multibillion dollar U.S. market cap and the ability, certainly over the last year that we’ve been dealing with them, to raise large amounts of equity. They’re actually moving beyond lithium conversion into cathode production and batteries. As you get further down the chain, the lithium value in that end product becomes less so they become a stronger partner, we’re able to get the mine up, they take a lot of production and then after 3-4 years of production we’re then able to take some of the feed and put it into our own down streaming plant. We’re doing it in two stages rather than having a half a billion dollar roll of the dice to start off with. We’ve done a deal with Australia’s largest processor of minerals where we’ve developed the world’s--- within 12 months we’ve constructed the world’s biggest hard rock lithium concentrator that’s twice as big as the plant down at Greenbushes…to access the complete interview, click here Disclaimer: Neometals Ltd. is an advertorial member of InvestorIntel.

To subscribe to our newsletter and get notified of new shows, please visit http://palisaderadio.com Chris describes his background in capital markets and how why he decided to become an independent researcher into rare earth and energy metals. He felt that the small sector was being ignored by institutions and there was going to be increasing demand for these metals. He says it was dull for the first few years, but now things are really picking up. The lithium market has responded positively to the increase in price over the past year. There is continuing demand from China. Many people are just beginning to understand this market and how it relates to the electric vehicles. The coming months will be positive for investors. There is a powerful economic tail-wind in play right now. Battery technology and prices are continuing to get cheaper. Solar, wind, and batteries are all getting more affordable and as technology improves the energy metals look increasingly promising. China usually does what they say they will do, and they want seven million new vehicles on the road by 2025. That alone will increase lithium demand from 215k tons to over 300k tons. He feels E.V. demand will center around China and their desire to clean up air quality. Investment interest is still lagging, and there is much room for growth. As underlying commodity prices improve, the stocks and market caps are likely to perform well. Mr. Berry expects that the general theme for 2018 will be one of consolidation and acquisitions as major companies look for long-term supply. He discusses various companies that can provide good pure exposure to the market.

November 29, 2016 -- Kirill Klip, President of International Lithium Corp. (TSXV: ILC), in an interview with InvestorIntel Corp. CEO Tracy Weslosky discuss the competitive advantage innate in having one of the world’s leading lithium material producers, Ganfeng as a global exploration partner. Recently announcing the drilling results from the Avalonia project in Ireland, Kirill explains why InvestorIntel European Editor Christopher Ecclestone describes International Lithium as having “battery grade” lithium. Tracy Weslosky: For all of, for our InvestorIntel audience out there I’ve been actually chasing Kirill down for about 3 years now. Has it been 3 years Kirill? Kirill Klip: Yeah, that’s true. Tracy Weslosky: So we’re delighted to have you as an InvestorIntel member and I would love it if you would start by explaining why we were chasing you down and give the InvestorIntel audience a better overview and introduction to who International Lithium Corp. (TSXV: ILC) is please. Kirill Klip: Thank you Tracy. You are very kind to us. International Lithium is a lithium exploration and development company. What really makes us standalone from the crowd is our vertically integrated business model with Ganfeng Lithium. Ganfeng Lithium is one of the major lithium material producers from China and now with them we are exploring on three continents, if you could believe it, in South America, in Ireland and in Canada. Tracy Weslosky: Well as you know --- we agree with you, your deal with Ganfeng Lithium is substantial. I’m going to have you back up and reintroduce our audience to the actual deal that you have because I think it’s really going to affect your market valuation Kirill when our audience understands what this deal is. Kirill Klip: Yes, thank you; very, very interesting and important question. Ganfeng Lithium grown up from $3 million in sales in the year 2000 to more than $200 million in sales last year. Now we have basically lithium top 5 in the world with Albemarle number one, with SQM number two and now Ganfeng and another Chinese company, Tianqui push former three in the world, FMC, into the fifth place. Basically we are making business with $4.5 billion dollar market cap company from China, Ganfeng Lithium, which is now on field with four plays dependent on their searches. We were fortunate we started our business 7 years ago and this year actually we celebrated our fifth anniversary of our IPO with Ganfeng Lithium. Like you mentioned, we can call it the major deal in the whole lithium sector because we are the only one basically an exploration arm of a major lithium producing company. They spent two years studying all our projects, making all due diligences on our properties. In the end they have chosen two major projects, which are now developing with them joint ventures, one of them is in Ireland and another one in Argentina. The Argentina one is called Mariana and in Ireland we have Avalonia project with Ganfeng. Tracy Weslosky: Okay. Speaking of Avalonia project, you just did the mobilization of your drills with Ganfeng. Is that not correct? You just announced this, what, 2 months ago. Kirill Klip: Yes, exactly. Two months ago we mobilized 2 drills following our very impressive results. Now we have up to 9 known pegmatites over there, some of them as large as 500 meters. We have very, very interesting intersections. ''I advise George [Roach of Premier African Minerals Ltd (LON:PREM)] and the board with respect to what's going on with their Zulu Lithium project in Zimbabwe …. they're coming up with some spectacular grades'', entrepreneur David Lenigas tells Proactive's Andrew Scott. ''This is going to be a very, very big Lithium deposit and what people don't understand is that Zimbabwe's the world's fifth largest Lithium producer''. Lenigas goes on to say ''the whole dynamics of the energy sector is changing - the world currently consumes 180,000 tonnes/year of Lithium. The forecasts are that within the next 10 years that will double or triple so the world needs a lot more Lithium supply''. ''Lithium is the new oil … with respect to automation''. ''Sure there are plenty of other types of technology out there but Lithium is tried and proven, there's been a lot of money spent on it and Lithium has a very unique place on the periodic table … so whether you've got Lithium anode, Lithium cathode or Lithium anode and cathode there's Lithium in this equation somewhere'', Lenigas says.
